“The human spirit lives on creativity and dies in conformity and routine.”
Vilayat Inayat Khan
Routines run our lives, most of us have very similar routines. Wake up, exercise, commute to work, work, commute from work, eat, watch our favourite tv shows, sleep and repeat.
I remember when I was working 9-5pm there were times when I had so few thoughts during the work day as my body and mind had become so accustomed to what I did my actions had become automatic.
Your everyday routines are comfortable and they usually work out pretty well for getting through day-to-day tasks without having to think too much about it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this; these routines help us live a long and healthy life. However, all of life is a balance, and at times, your pre-planned practices become a deterrent to your personal growth and flexibility.
Any time you force yourself to make a change to your workflow, you encourage your brain to make new connections (neuroplasticity). Routines can run on idle, but changing our habits force your brain to pay attention and learn what you're doing more carefully.
Here are five reasons why you should break from your routine:
1- Learn new things
Take a moment to learn something new every day. This newfound knowledge can be academic or practical; it doesn't matter, so long as it broadens your horizons. The point is to initiate your transformation into something different than your old self.
2- Analyze your life
Every once in a while, you should put your life on pause, take a step back, and take a good look at where you stand. Figure out what you've accomplished so far and examine the distance between that place and where you intend to go in your life. This is a good opportunity to establish a five or ten-year plan. Once you have your priorities straight, you'll know the way to success.
3- Travel to new places
The next vacation you go on should take you somewhere you've never been before. Rather than the all inclusive resorts or 7 days led on a beach, challenge yourself to something completely new.
4- Take risks
You must follow your long-nurtured dreams. If you have always wanted to run an iron man, there is no better time to start than now. If it is a business risk, do your homework, make your plan and take the first step in following your dreams. Those who risk nothing, gain nothing.
5- Bucket List
Write down everything you want to achieve by the time you are 30,40,50,60,70. Are you close to completing many of them or do you envisage completing them with the way your life is panning out? No? Then this your chance to begin working towards all your goals!
